Upstairs & Downstairs: The Illustrated Guide to the Real World of Downton Abbey, by Sarah Warwick

This beautifully illustrated book takes readers on a guided tour of a single day in an upper-crust English home of the Edwardian era. Starting with the servants hard at work while the family is still abed, and culminating in a lavish dinner party, Upstairs & Downstairs lifts the curtain on this fascinating period, as well as its historical bookends, the Victorian and post-World War I eras. Includes accounts from actual masters and servants, along with feature spreads on famous figures like Winston Churchill and Virginia Woolf.

All things Edwardian
By wogan
The first thing you should know is that this book is not about Downton Abbey. It is not even about Highclere Castle, the home of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon that is used as the setting of the show Downton Abbey. It is almost like false advertising (4 stars instead of 5) being titled `Upstairs & Downstairs - the Illustrated Guide to the Real World of Downton Abbey'. In spite of this, this is a very good and fascinating book.

What this book contains is excellent and interesting information on mainly the world of servants and the upper classes they served during the Edwardian Age. The fact that this world was drawing to a close is well documented. The book is organized into the time periods of the day; before dawn, breakfast time, morning activities, lunchtime, afternoon activities, fine dining and the end of the day. There are specific examples of some of the personalities of the time; George Bernard Shaw, Emmeline Pankhurst, Winston Churchill, Virginia Wolf, P.G. Wodehouse.

The descriptions are done well of what the various servants chores were, what they wore and ate. Their salaries are given, although comparisons could have been better to what that amount of money would relate to today and nowhere do we ever find out what happened to all the leftovers from the huge meals served to those upstairs.
The photos and pictures are well done and noteworthy - all described in a good manner. This is truly an appealing book for those who want to know more about the social life of Edwardian England.

Real history about what life was like for common people
By LD
I've read books on the series and this one impresses me as being more about the era than about what is portrayed in the TV show.

The US has never had a class of people like the British aristocracy and therefore never a body of servants like you will read about in this book. The closest the Gilded Age Americans came to this life was when their daughters married titled British heirs (1870-1920) who wanted their dowries to finance the collapsing estates.

The book provides an enormous amount of details about the differences between those servants who worked "upstairs" and those who worked "downstairs". Individuals that had to be on both levels usually had to change their attire before working on the other level. The personal lives, activities, and duties of all the household staff on a country estate are detailed.

Britain was undergoing a societal overhaul during the early 20th century. This was being pushed by new technology and social reformers. Their impacts on the households is described. I thoroughly enjoyed this look at a bygone era.

An exercise in how to market a not very well thought out book
By Michael K. Smith
The subtitle of this exercise in book marketing is "The Illustrated Guide to the Real World of Downton Abbey" -- but you can ignore that because there's nothing whatever about the television program or its fictional world. The Introduction says the subject is the Edwardian country house, "a place of extreme luxury and abject drudgery, . . . a society that was more unequal than at any time before or since." (Really? Peasants in the early 13th century of the Norman monarchy might disagree, and so might field hands in South Carolina in 1830.) In any case, there's almost nothing about the world of servants outside of London, either.

What you will find here is 125 pages of mostly pictures, divided into chapters devoted more or less to the phases of the day -- "Before Dawn," "Lunchtime," "Fine Dining," and so on. While many of these photos are interesting in themselves, not all of them are germane to the stated topic, ranging as they do from the 1840s to the 1930s, far outside the Edwardian era.

Warwick's credentials as an author are left unstated but the rather thin text often reads as if it were cribbed from other secondary sources. (There are numerous sidebar quotes from servants' memoirs and such, but no bibliography to allow the reader to follow them up.) There are also photo essays on Beatrix Potter, the Sitwell family, P.G. Wodehouse, Virginia Woolf, and several other leading figures of the first half of the 20th century; again, none of these have anything to do with the subject of the serving class -- except that, of course, they all had servants, just like everyone else with money and status. At least the essay on Winston Churchill focuses attention on his nanny, whose portrait he kept on his bedside table all his life. (Winston's famous father, Lord Randolph Churchill, however, is described ingenuously as "also a politician.")

All in all, it's pretty clear that this is really just an attempt to cash in on the popularity of "Downton Abbey" and the revived "Upstairs, Downstairs," but not a very successful one.
