This book is a compilation of high-yield, at-a-glance summaries for various topics on which pathologists frequently need information in a quick reference format while at the microscope (or when cramming for the boards). The authors are early-career pathologists who have compiled this book from the perspective of pathologists-in-training. The focus is not organ-based histologic criteria, but rather everything else that goes into pathologic diagnoses but is difficult to keep committed to memory. The emphasis is on immunohistochemistry, special stains, grading systems, molecular markers, tumor syndromes, and helpful clinical references. Also included are morphologic summaries that encompass high-yield material cutting across all organ systems, such as an illustrated guide for microorganisms, tumor differentials, and an illustrated glossary.
The book has a unique format in that the information is presented primarily in tables and diagrams accompanied by minimal explanatory text. The guiding principle was to boil the information down to the essentials but with just enough commentary to be accessible to a newcomer to pathology. This book is intended to serve as a ‘peripheral brain’ for pathology residents where frequently needed information is readily accessible and easy to navigate. Justin A. Bishop, MD, is an Assistant Professor in Surgical Pathology at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore.

Total game changer - every resident and practicing pathologist needs this book

This book is a total game changer. I'm a PGY1 and about 6 months into the practice. I was recommended this book by an upperclass resident and very glad that I bought it. Every resident needs to own this book. There is a section that has illustrations that show the differential expression of CD markers in lymphocytes. It's a very difficult concept to learn from tables typically found in large text books. But this book is different - it uses easy-to-understand tables and illustrations to explain the rationale for ordering different IHCs. There's also a section that has the common pathology lingo e.g. Herringbone pattern, different types of rosettes, picket fence, zellballen, and etc.
I suppose the physical construction of this book is fairly poor compared to other similarly priced textbooks. Soft cover, not-so-great looking paper.
Seriously? Totally reminds of med school where everyone was feeling entitled and kept complaining for no reason. Seriously, use your book fund and cop this book now. You won't regret it.

chock full of high yield information

This book is invaluable for residents. If somehow I could transfer this info to my brain I would be the best resident around. From stains to translocation I have actually turned many of the tables in this book into flashcards for my boards. There are also some great general overviews filled with information I haven't found elsewhere.
