Fairly Good

Engineering Mechanics: Statics is a fairly decent book for an introductory course into Statics, which is the first course one can take in Engineering at my school. The book covers a fair amount of topics and, for the purposes of our class, went beyond what was required by the course. The book makes solid use of calculus - both single and multivariable - where necessary and does not do more "handwaving" than necessary. As for its drawbacks, however, the book does make quite a lot of errors in its solutions key that proved to be somewhat frustrating when I attempted to review material by myself and found that I couldn't get the same answers as the solutions key. Additionally, some of the diagrams are constructed in a very confusing manner and it is nearly impossible to pick out the dimensions of the diagram (i.e, does this joint have a z-component or not). The author should've probably taken some extra time ensuring that the diagrams were well-put out instead of assuming that the reader knew everything. Additionally, some topics, such as the Method of Sections, lacked explanatory depth and I would've appreciated it if the author had gone a little further into its technique instead of just glancing over it. However, when all's said and done, this is still a fairly good book for an introductory course in Statics and Engineering. However, I think there are probably better alternatives out there.

About the Author
Anthony Sully (DesRCA, FCSD, FRSA, FHEA) has studied art and interior design at undergraduate and post-graduate level, and has practised interior design on a freelance basis and as an employee working with designers and architects. He has designed many projects, which have gained public recognition and awards and has been the course director for five degree programmes in the UK and a visiting professor to two institutions in the USA.
He has� written two books previously published in 1970 and 2012 and continues to� research and engage with current trends and developments. He is also an artist in acrylic and digital media.

The perfect gift!

I thought these and they were supposed to be for me but I had a family member in a discouraging situation and she really needed hope. They are like a deck of playing cards and each day I draw 1 card and on one side is a Bible quote on the other side is an inspirational saying applying to whatever the deck is and it is just so awesome to have a daily message that is for you to uplift and encourage you on days that are so hard. I am keeping some of these in my closet in case I forget a birthday. They are also a gift from the heart and let a person know that you really search for something meaningful for them. They are just so awesome and such a good price!

I would buy this book for the first chapter alone- which contains one of the best explanations of algorithm complexity and effic

An absolute gem in clarity and depth of topic. I only have a background in C/C++ with a little knowledge of discrete math. This book builds upon those knowledge and takes you in-depth with the different algorithms and how to analyze their complexity. I would buy this book for the first chapter alone- which contains one of the best explanations of algorithm complexity and efficiency, without stripping the academic overtone (formal definitions). There plenty of examples provided by the author is the perfect pedagogy for anyone who learns by example and I cannot overstate how eloquent and easy to understand the author makes the material out to be, eventhough they are quite difficult concepts. Dr. Neapolitan book should come highly recommended to anyone who struggled with other Algorithm books not just for a graduate or undergrad course, but also for self-study.

I tried those algorithm books

Algorithm Design by Kleiberg
Algorithms (4th Edition) by Sedgewick

My favorite is Neapolitan's, because
1.
It covers both design paradigms and complexity analysis.
Kleinberg's focus on design paradigm, and
Sedgewick's focus on complexity analysis of already existing algorithms.
Neapolitan is somewhere between those two.
2.
I like the author's presentation style.
: it start with a very easy algorithm at the beginning of each chapter and gradually increase the difficulty.
It really helps to understand the design paradigm, NOT to memorize each algorithm.
3.
It contains pseudo code, making the book practical.
This also makes the reading more clear and compact.

Good Algorithms book

This was a great algorithms book. I used it for a grad level algorithms course where we went in depth into every chapter of this book, and I am very glad that he chose this book. This books makes all of the chapters relatively easy, even when the algorithm being discussed is fairly difficult to grasp. I am going to be reading CLRS next during my free time to better understand some of the harder to grasp algorithms and in order to learn some algorithms not discussed in this book, as it is cheaper than this book and more highly regarded, but I still really enjoyed this book.

Why Annie and I Wrote This Book:
Cultural pressures among peers too often discourage interest in the sciences, especially among girls. We wrote this book because we felt that the narrative hook of adventuring on the moon could generate more interest in the physical sciences and in space exploration. That and we think our readers will have one wild ride!

Intended Audience:
Andromeda's Moon is a "hard science fiction" novel intended for ages 9 and up. The book is a collaboration between a 12-year-old daughter and her 39-year-old father.

Scientific Accuracy:
Scientific and technical details were reviewed and amended by experts, most notably astrophysicist Dr. Michelle Thaller at NASA's Education division and Constance Adams, a Space Architect whose work has included designing the TransHab module for the International Space Station. Andromeda's Moon carefully integrates scientific detail into the storyline, paying particular attention to the unique physical characteristics of the moon and space travel.

Key themes include the following:

The effects of low and zero gravity on objects and the human body.
The implications of operating in a near-vacuum environment, e.g., A vacuum cannot conduct heat and speech is inaudible.
The unusual qualities of the lunar surface and how it differs from Earth (lunar geology/selenology).

Integration of these amazing lunar qualities into the narrative markedly differentiates Andromeda's Moon from other literary works. The book also introduces relevant scientific concepts and vocabulary.

Social-Emotional Themes:
After touching down on the lunar colony, Andromeda struggles to adapt to the new environment. She faces familiar pre-teen issues: finding new friends, coping with bullying, missing home, making tough choices, and growing independent from her now-distant father.

Approach to Gender:
Andromeda's Moon features strong, smart female lead characters that drive the storyline, instead of hovering passively at the edges. We credit this to a wake-up call from the Geena Davis Institute, which has highlighted the serious gender gap both quantitatively and qualitatively across media formats.

Interesting Plot

I have a love/hate relationship with the mystery genre. I love watching the logic of who done it, and trying to stay one step ahead of the mystery solvers. However, I hate it when the mystery solvers are sticking their noses where they don't belong, especially if the mystery solvers are kids, and there is someone else supposed to be solving this mystery. If they make the person who is supposed to be solving the case look petty and incompetent, I like it even less.

This book fell firmly into that category. There were times when I put it down and I almost didn't return. The only thing that kept me coming back was a desire to know if my suspicion about who the villain was was correct. I had had the guy picked out for the villain the moment they introduced him. I was correct, by the way, but I won't tell you who it was. You can figure it out for yourself.

This book was advertised as being full of hilarious moments ... and I suppose it is ... if your idea of hilarious is getting laughs from someone else's pain. There were moments I did laugh, but most of the time I just cringed or rolled my eyes. Mom says I talked to this book a lot.

I had no love for the main character, Andromeda, and very little sympathy for her plight. The reason for her getting stuck on the space ship was her own fault. She was being disrespectful of authority, especially of her father. She probably could have avoided getting trapped on that space ship by simply not taking her cat with her. That cat did NOTHING for the story, other than getting her trapped on the space ship, and I would frankly like to know how she zip-corded while carrying a cat cage. My mental image just falls short. I did finally figure out why the cat came though. You see, this was a co-write and one of the authors was a twelve year-old girl. Every twelve-year-old girl has her favorite animal, Annie's just happens to be a cat, and obviously the cat just had to come along as a result.

Andromeda, or Andrie as she was often called, reminded me of a spoiled brat. She was manipulative, conniving, disrespectful and all around left me with an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of my stomach. The only thing that ever induced me to feel sorry for her was when it was revealed that her mother got lost on the far side of the moon. There was only one thing that she did that I at all applauded was when she stood up for a girl who was being teased.

This book is also advertised as being scientifically accurate, as it was reviewed by someone from NASA. I'm sure that, on all of those points it probably was. However, something I always wondered was why technology is so much more advanced on the moon than it is on earth. I can understand why the stuff that involves people not weighing as much would not be on earth, but I would have thought that the classrooms on earth would have much of the same technology as does the ones on earth, especially Andrie's school, as she just struck me as someone who runs in high technology circles. I mean, her dad designed the rocket she rode on!

Now, this wasn't a bad book, and I did eventually come back every time I put it down, and I probably would read a sequel if one came out, but there were a lot of things that left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe a twelve-year-old who goes to a public schoool wouldn't have a problem with it, but I, a homeschooled 17 year old, did.

Just the right amount of headstrong girl to explorer (add a touch of getting into trouble)

I bought this for my granddaughter, but I preread all JV stories (just in case of inappropriate scenarios or language). This is book 1 and the author did a great job on plot and content. I can hardly wait for my granddaughter to read so we can add her thoughts to this review.
