Elizabeth A. Castelli is Associate Professor of Religion at Barnard College at Columbia University. She has held several other teaching and research positions, most recently serving as the Senior Research Scholar at the Center for Religion and Media at New York University during its inaugural year (2003-2004). She is a specialist in the academic study of religion, author most recently of Martyrdom and Memory: Early Christian Culture Making.

Seriously too short

This book is seriously too short. The author's description of what it's like to be bullied is dead on. The suspense is carried through to the last few pages. That said, the larger story is just begging to be told, a resolution between Trevor and Justin down the line is wanted, and the adventures and moral growth of the vampire colony (a group of bats is called a colony, your terminology may be better), could be offered too. As is Taryn's back-story and - please - an early, after dark evening where Justin is again "cornered" by his tormentors and teaches them a lesson would not go amiss. Not to mention more about our young man dying of cancer and what might be done for him.

There are so many places this story can go. I can offer but few suggestions to the author - make sure to have your next manuscript professionally copy-edited before going to e-print. There's not much that needs to be done with your grammar or sentence structure, but typos and incorrect use of quotation marks get to be distracting. Apart from that, resolve Justin's self-doubt and evolve the overall story out of his head, out of his suffering and self-doubt, and let us share in his experiences and adventures in the new world he has adopted.

comicality proves in this novel he could take same sex romances into the commercial broader market. It is well written, exciting and contains wisdom appropriate for teenagers and young adults. I went thru it in two readings because it caught my interest and concern for the characters.

About the Author
Ernie Kurtz received his Ph.D. in the History of American Civilization from Harvard University in 1978. His doctoral dissertation was published as the book Not-God: A History of Alcoholics Anonymous. Since then, he has published The Spirituality of Imperfection, and the booklet Shame and Guilt: Characteristics of the Dependency Cycle. He has also published a number of articles, both scholarly and popular, on topics related to his interests and has lectured nationally and internationally on subjects related to the academic study of spirituality. Some of his articles have been published in the 1999 book, The Collected Ernie Kurtz. Dr. Kurtz taught American History and the History of Religion in America at the University of Georgia and Loyola University of Chicago. From 1978 to 1997, he served on the faculty of the Rutgers University Summer School of Alcohol Studies and from 1987 to 1997 as a lecturer at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. After a brief stint as Director of Research and Education at Guest House, then an alcoholism treatment facility for Catholic clergy, Ernie retired to Ann Arbor, Michigan, and began taking classes in the School of Information at the University of Michigan. He continued to travel widely offering presentations until late 1997, when a botched medical procedure led to spinal surgery that only partially restored his ability to stand and walk. Noting that "it is ironic that I now walk like a drunk," Ernie devoted his remaining time to the intricacies and possibilities of electronic research in this field. Ernie passed away January 2015.

" God , I'm Not-God , You Are-God " became my " mantra " during the second year of my recovery in the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. I still repeat it often. I had never heard the phrase " Not-God " . Yet, many people around me and many of my readings suggested I had to stop playing God , especially if I wanted relief from the continuous stream of thoughts that would enter my mind. Not until I admitted , believed and accepted that I was " Not-God " , was I given the relief I sought.
This book provides a historical foundation for an understanding of Alcoholics Anonymous. In addition, it fills the blanks required for a more thorough understanding of the big book of Alcoholics Anonymous.
It is an absolute must read for those interested in Alcoholics Anonymous . In addition , I suggest alcoholics read the book if they are fortunate to reach a point in their recovery where they develop a curiosity as to the history of AA . Tim H.

Deep and Clear

I have read widely about AA. This is the best history I have read. Not only does the author organize many historical details, but strings them into a cogent storyline, Kurtz explains the underlying theme of developments, using the idea of Powerless-ness brings Power, and how it is a Spiritual concept. I can see how many detractors don't really understand the basic ideas of AA.
There is so much in the book and footnotes; that I plan to re-read much of it.

About the Author

Pamela S. Haibach, PhD, is associate professor in the department of kinesiology, sport studies, and physical education at the College at Brockport, State University of New York. She is also coordinator of the kinesiology major and the study abroad programs for four majors in the kinesiology, sport studies, and physical education department at the College at Brockport.

Her teaching and research, including descriptive and intervention studies, focuses on performance, learning, postural control, and balance. Her research has spanned from children to older adults, including developing individuals, individuals with disabilities, and other special populations. Haibach earned her doctorate in kinesiology (2005) with an emphasis in motor behavior from Pennsylvania State University under the advisement of Dr. Karl M. Newell.

Haibach is president of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education’s (NASPE) Motor Development and Learning Academy and a member of the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity (IFAPA); American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD); International Society of Motor Control (ISMC); and the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity (NASPSPA). Active in her community, Haibach serves as a board member for the Brockport Child Development Center, co-chair of the Parent Teacher Association at the Brockport Central School District (Barclay), and co-advisor for the College at Brockport Lions Club, which fundraises for CampAbilities, an on-campus sport camp for children and adolescents with visual impairments.

In her free time, Haibach enjoys fitness-related activities, ballroom dancing, boating, cross-country skiing, and water sports. She and her husband, Jeff, and two children, Tristan and Makayla, reside in Brockport, New York. As both a researcher and a mother, she enjoys experiencing the growth and development of her two young children.

Greg Reid, PhD, is a professor in the department of kinesiology and physical education at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. A former elementary school physical education teacher and long-time youth coach in ice hockey and baseball, Reid obtained his graduate education in adapted physical activity, motor learning, and special education. As a teacher and researcher, Reid maintains a strong focus on theory-to-practice applications. Reid has taught motor development since 1986 and has conducted research since 1978 in the areas of performance, learning, and development spanning from children to older adults and including the study of individuals with and without disabilities.

In addition to his teaching and research, Reid supervises the practicum experiences of undergraduates teaching individuals with disabilities. He is also a former undergraduate program director and chair of the department of kinesiology and physical education at McGill University.

Reid is a member of the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity (IFAPA); American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD); and the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). In 1997 he received the G. Lawrence Rarick Research Award from AAHPERD’s National Consortium for Physical Education and Recreation for Individuals with Disabilities. He was elected an international member of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education in 1999.

Reid and his wife, Carol, reside in Ste-Adele, Quebec. They have two grown sons, Drew and Tyler. In his free time he enjoys hiking, bicycling, cross-country and downhill skiing, and reading novels. He is also currently enjoying the motor development and learning accomplishments of his grandson, Jacob Liam Reid.

Douglas H. Collier, PhD, is associate professor in the department of kinesiology, sport studies, and physical education as well as the co-coordinator of the teacher certification major at the College at Brockport, State University of New York. Collier was a delegate to the Jasper talks (1985), a significant policy workshop that became the catalyst to Collier’s career-long interest in motor development. For the past three decades, his research agenda has examined, with an emphasis on theory to practice, various facets of motor development that pertain to the education of typically developing children and those with identifiable disabilities. Collier has presented his research at multiple national and international conferences concerned with the study of motor development and pedagogy.

Over the course of his 18-year career in higher education, Collier has served in multiple leadership positions at local, state, and national levels. Currently he is a member of the North American Federation of Adapted Physical Activity (NAFAPA); American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD); and the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity (NASPSPA).

Collier holds a doctorate in human performance from Indiana University (1993), where he studied under the advisement of Drs. Dale Ulrich, Beverly Ulrich, and Esther Thelen. In his free time, Collier enjoys racket sports, photography, and canoeing. He and his wife, Christine, reside in Brockport, New York. They have two grown daughters, Robin and Shannon.

An informative, easy to read overview of autism.

As a mother of three children with physical disabilities, I often find myself involved with families and their children with autism. I wanted to understand what they go through and gain knowledge of the behaviors that the families are challenged with. This book marked my first time to try and educate myself and understand autism. I found this book to be very helpful, simple to read and easy to reference.

A certified nutritionist and master herbalist, Yance here touches on the very broad areas of herbs, natural healing, and cancer. While critical of the established medical community for its attitude toward natural healing, whose scientific basis he tries to explain with extensive references, he nevertheless combines conventional therapies with herbs, nutritional supplements, and lifestyle changes to achieve the best results. Yance covers many topics but not in enough depth to make this book useful for lay readers, except for the sample recipes and coverage of the natural ways to relieve the side effects of chemotherapy. The chapters on the chemical composition of herbs and supplements are more suitable for medical doctors, herbalists, and nutritionists. A MUST read before you take any crazy harmful drugs if you have been diagnosed. Do your own research and tell your Dr. what you want. Don't ask him what you need. They know absolutely NOTHING for certain in the world of cancer except how to burn through bazillions of dollars under the guise of research.

A cooperative working relationship between "allopathic" physicians and "naturalists" is long overdue in my opinion, and my opinion ought to be worth something. I am a physician with 25 years experience in cancer medicine and I have board certifications in internal medicine, medical oncology, hematology, and radiation oncology. Mr. Yance's book is a step in the right direction, and I feel it is a worthwhile reference for any physician who is interested in the nutritional welfare of his patients. The book is far from perfect, however. For example, Mr. Yance overstates the risk of carcinogenesis from therapeutic radiation, presents site-specific side effects such as dry mouth as if they were general effects of radiation, underplays the value and effectiveness of radiation for common adult tumors such as breast cancer, and claims benefit for herbal or nutritional remedies for side effects of cancer treatment even when they have been shown to be ineffective in clinical trials. Administration of vitamin B12 and folate to prevent chemotherapy-induced neuropathy is the most egregious example. At the same time, glutamine is not mentioned for prevention of neuropathy though it is known to be useful, at least for prevention of nerve injury from vinca alkaloids.
Another problem is that much of the nutritional information is too technically advanced for most lay readers. One would have to know more biochemistry than the majority of phyicians to wade through the terminology.
Despite its shortcomings, I think Mr. Yance's book is a valuable resource and would recommend it to my medical colleagues. My advice to the general public is to go to the best source for information about cancer treatments. As a medical and radiation oncologist, I wouldn't try to inform my patients about nutritional therapies, and I sure wouldn't ask a nutritionist their opinion about radiation or chemotherapy. Discuss all the therapeutic issues with your main healthcare provider. If he or she won't discuss herbal, nutritional, and other alternative or complementary modalities, ask for other opinions.

2000 pages of information in a 400-page book!

Boy ... this is not an easy book, took me months to finish it!
This is absolutely an advanced level book from two of the biggest motor-drive experts (expert cannot describe it, I would call Professors Novotny, Crause, Lippo, Blaschke, and Hasse "THE GODS of Motor-Drives", since they basically created and developed this field! Anyway ...) that contains the fruits of their decades of core research and extensive experience. You cannot find one single extra/unnecessary word in this 400 page book. Every written line is needed to be there and should be carefully read and fully digested by the reader. I wish Professors Novotny and Lipo would have published newer editions of this book with some update and expansion.

Note: This is not a beginner's book (there are other great text books out there if you want to start motor-drives).

The book is a useful reference for anyone who wishes to understand vector control better. It's an advanced text and the reader should have a background in AC machine control from a text like Krishnan's or Krause's before they can grasp the content of this. I was expecting better and clearer content in the discussion of switching rules and models. Nonetheless it is a useful buy.

The definite guide for modern electric drives. Also includes a chapter on modeling of voltage source converters in the d q reference frame. This book is virtually unobtainable through other means like ieeexplore or wiley, etc.
