Some posed as children of non-Jewish families, others were sheltered in religious institutions or orphanages, still others spent years in airless bunkers or attics. Some lived in constant fear, moving from place to place; others did not realize they were in danger and spent the war in relative peace. A few were resented and even betrayed by those who hid them; luckier children were welcomed as part of the family. Incorporating his subjects' testimonies into succinct accounts of individual survival, Greenfeld produces a well-rounded and varied picture of their collective experiences, from the first stirrings of war through their liberation and beyond. The volume's design intensifies the impact of the stories: contemporaneous photos of the subjects, distributed throughout the text, put faces with the words. This moving, thoughtful approach to the study of the Holocaust will help young readers grasp the horrors endured in those years by people their own age. Ages 8-up.

Grade 4 Up-The experiences of 15 children who survived the Holocaust in hiding are presented here within the historical context of the Nazi rise to power and World War II. These youngsters were sheltered in a variety of private homes and institutions by "righteous Gentiles," family friends, and those simply looking for additional money; some were resented, some treated compassionately, and others mistreated and abused physically. Greenfeld has interviewed these survivors, who are now living in the U.S., and has recorded their memories. Both the mundane and the unusual are remembered; the most commonly described feelings are the fear that family members would perish and the sense of guilt at having survived while others did not. There are reminiscences of narrow escapes and poignant remembered pleasures of edible treats. While the chronological arrangement of the book makes it difficult to follow a specific child's story (it is possible by using the excellent index), it succeeds admirably in allowing readers to place the experiences described within the framework of the Holocaust. An excellent selection of black-and-white photographs and an open design contribute to making this an important and accessible resource.

Gr. 5-10. "I remember all the time being told to be quiet, the Germans will get you." In order to live, Jewish children had to go into hiding from the Nazis during the Second World War. Greenfeld has spoken to survivors now living in the U.S., and he weaves pieces of their painful personal narratives with a general account of what it was like to be a Jewish child at that time. Like Anne Frank, many were hidden by Righteous Gentiles, who often risked their own lives. Like the children in Vos' Hide and Seek (1991) and Anna Is Still Here (1993), they had to lie, to be always on guard. The individual voices are intense and quiet. They speak of hunger, cold, terror, and loneliness. They remember suddenly being ashamed of themselves. Boys had to hide that they were circumcised. These children witnessed courage and also horror, such as the father who had to strangle his screaming baby to save the others in hiding. They're honest about their difficult readjustment after the war ("My mother was in such bad shape . . . she had no teeth�20.�20.�20.�20I couldn't stand being near her"). They will always feel guilty for having survived while others died. The slightly oversize book, printed on a fine vellum stock, is artistically designed, with clear type and wide margins, and the personal narratives are set off in italics, with occasional small black-and-white family snapshots that frame moments of ordinary life. A Moving Account

I just finished another book about the Holocaust that mentioned children being smuggled out of the Warsaw ghetto in backpacks and I wanted to hear more stories about how children survived the Holocaust.

This book is considered juvenile non-fiction but the information is the same regardless of the reader's age. Howard Greenfeld does a very good job organizing the stories of children who were hidden during the Holocaust. He includes their stories in their own words as well as photographs of the survivors.

A moving collection regardless of the reader's age.

A must read book.

I bought this book for my son, Jefferson, who is 9 years old. When I looked through it, I started reading it, and just couldn't put it down. It is a wonderful book, of hardships like we have never known before, and survival of a wonderful religion and people. We are not Jewish, but I enjoyed this book immensely, and will be reading other books by this author. This book is great for adults, really makes one appreciate all that we have in this country; freedom first and foremost. For children, it is a great book to teach about hardships and compassion for others, as well as understanding history and the second world war. A DEFINITE 5 stars from me.

Kurt Lancaster is the author of DSLR Cinema: Crafting the Film Look with Video. He is an associate professor at Northern Arizona University where he teaches digital filmmaking and multimedia journalism in the School of Communication.

This book provided excellent, practical information for producing video journalism or video period. He didn't just tell you what or how to do something, but showed you through the use of frame shots and online videos that he could reference. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to get started in video making.

As nothing but a grammar review...

This book is very useful. It starts off with the most simple grammar (regular verbs), and eventually progresses into more complex tenses, moods, pronoun uses, and even includes 13 pages of idioms and their translations in the back (and activities for you to learn them!).

For somebody that already speaks a romance language, this could serve as a pretty smooth introduction into French, as well. For the advanced beginner, perhaps - or somebody who doesn't want to waste time with a hundred dollars' worth of "This is a verb. This is an adjective."

Granted, there is no conversational aspect to this book, unless you're working with a partner - every chapter includes an "oral exercise", which you could probably do on your own, but it would help to have a friend to help you out.

The only downside to this book is that it assumes you already know a lot of French - it doesn't explain much of the vocabulary. Granted, you can get through this book without knowing a single word of French, simply by following the grammar rules, but for a serious student of French who wants an intensive grammar workout, this book is a MUST!

The exercises in this book are well-designed, and the explanations clear, but the major drawback is that it does not include answers, making a ton of work for a teacher like me, or leaving those teaching themselves in the dark about how they actually did on the exercises...

I love this French Grammer and Verb Congugation book! It is esy to use and is full of helpful information. I am a French major and use this book regularly in my classes. It goes through simple French to advanced French with fluidity and covers much class material.

About the Author
R.C. Hibbeler graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana with a BS in Civil Engineering (major in Structures) and an MS in Nuclear Engineering. He obtained his PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University.
Hibbeler’s professional experience includes postdoctoral work in reactor safety and analysis at Argonne National Laboratory, and structural work at Chicago Bridge and Iron, as well as Sargent and Lundy in Tucson. He has practiced engineering in Ohio, New York, and Louisiana.
Hibbeler currently teaches at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. In the past he has taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana, Youngstown State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Union College.

Not the same as hardcover

The paperback version of this book is NOT the same as the hardcover. The paperback version is in black and white, says on the cover that it's only supposed to be distributed in India, is missing tables and example problems, and is not 912 pages as advertised, it's only 876. Inside the cover it says it's an "authorized adaptation" of the actual book.

Don't get paperback!!! Choose something else!

I got the paperback and I'm here to tell you right now not to get it. It is a copy in black and white stuck with a cheap paperback print of a book cover where it even says in the top left-hand corner of the book that it is not to leave (at least on mine) the subcontinent of India. Just rent or buy an American hardback and skip this mess. It was cheaply packaged - wrapped in paper with tape wrapped around some of it - and arrived half-crushed. It's missing tables that come in really handy as a student, and I'm not sure that it really is all the 9th edition. Be very cautious!

BE AWARE OF THE PAPERBACK VERSION !!! THIS IS AN INTERNATIONAL CHEAP EDITION THAT IS PRINTED IN BLACK AND WHITE IN INDIA! THIS IS COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY SINCE IT DOES NOT CONTAIN THE TABLES THAT YOU WILL NEED FOR THIS COURSE.

Rip(pered) from the Headlines

Belloc-Lowndes was inspired by Jack the Ripper and she puts together an engaging fictional "what-if" as a result. The book focuses on a few critical, intertwined relationships. The Bunting's are down-on-their-luck and tend to be a little too accepting when their new lodger gives them a steady stream of income. Soon suspicions are raised and a great deal of the novel is dedicated to the conflicted Mrs. Bunting who has the closest relationship with the mysterious and dark Mr. Sleuth, a fitting villain. Less a mystery and more a morality tale, The Lodger is now showing its age. Readers may be put-off by repetition and pace but I encourage you to stick with it and enjoy this classic.

A Period Thriller Shows Its Age

This is an attractive reissue of a classic mystery, which became the basis for Hithcock's first successful thriller in the late 1920s. The novel, which began as a short story, is loosely based on the infamous Whitechapel murders, which had occurred about three decades before Belloc-Lowndes fictionalized the events. A great virtue of this work is its capturing of time and place, the atmosphere of London a century ago, its understated presentation, and its delicate presentation of moral ambiguity. (The landlady and her husband are so miserably poor, in desperate need of their lodger's fees, that they cannot bring themselves to face fully their suspicions and complicity in crime.) And yet, after years of looking forward to reading it, I confess disappointment with this work. The pacing is slow, there is surprisingly little suspense, and the titular character is so full of ennui that he could kill you with boredom. While there are some fine turns of phrase, I found much of the prose flaccid. I made my way to the book's end: partly owing to stubbornness, in part hopeful that the conclusion would somehow redeem the longeurs. I was mistaken. This is finally a most curious work: perhaps the most famous of all fictionalized versions of Jack the Ripper, and one of the dullest. Given its subject matter, one would not think that possible, but time has not been kind to "The Lodger."

wonderful classic

It was hard to put down. A real gem. The writing style is very good and not dated. Checked out Hitchcock's film version. There were a lot of liberties taken but overall it was a pleasant adaptation. Highly recommended.

Very Strong on Writing Philosophy, but Less so on Doing It

Since I am neither a student nor an instructor, nor a philosopher in any sense, perhaps I am not properly credentialed to review this book. Nonetheless, I opted to do so because I consider the book overall to be conceptually unique, pragmatically valuable, and quite relevant beyond the discipline of philosophy itself. Basically, the author’s approach to formal or scholarly writing is clearly expressed in a compact yet thorough form, and its merit has motivated my attempt to apply or adapt the author’s recommendations in drafting a research paper.

After completing the book, I turned to its table of contents to locate certain topics. In so doing, I was amazed at how sensibly the book is organized, and in turn, how readily key content can thereby be located. Evidently, the author practiced the essence of his own advice in structuring and developing his message. Since I consider the book to be an enduring reference, I would expect to use its table of contents primarily in the future rather than its index. Yes, that was a bit of a surprise to me.

Part I, the larger part of the book, addresses writing per se, and does so in an excellent and most practical fashion. The advice and pointers for students, moreover, are interesting and sensible. There is no doubt they can aid in coursework orientation, expository caveats, and stylistic heuristics, and hence can foster improved overall academic performance. Quite impressive! Unfortunately, Part II of the book, addressing the ‘doing’ of philosophy, seems somewhat extraneous or disjunct. It might, nevertheless, serve to familiarize philosophy majors informally with the nature and protocols of their chosen discipline.

Most significantly, my motivation for reading this book - an improved grasp of the craft and style of incisively writing well-reasoned research papers - was quite amply satisfied. Mogck’s general approach is to formulate and refine a solid argument as a precondition to preparing an outline for a contemplated writing task. Once the outline is set, he advises one to begin writing without further delay, as a precaution for writers’ block. Sometimes, it may then happen that the emerging draft reveals an ideational packaging or topical flow that is preferable to that of the already generated text. In such a case, his recommendation is to discard the initial draft text entirely and to begin writing anew, with a better informed sense of focus and a more promising expository trajectory. While none of these recommendations is strictly new, they are presented in a readable, coherent, and unified form. Moreover, the author augments and amplifies his overall approach with vital compositional guidance and discipline conventions that engender scholarly text. More specifically, the following items would likely be especially valuable to a student or to a novice:

• Elaborated glossary of philosophical terms (six pages)
- some of the terms are further examined in subsequent text
• Incisive guidance for articulating an argument in philosophical paper form
- from thesis formulation through rendering the respective parts of a paper
• A list of definitions of Latin abbreviations typically seen in formal writing
- very convenient to have this ample complement thereof in a single location
• A list of meanings/usages of Latin expressions typically seen in formal writing
- along with amplified characterizations and notable subtleties of use
• A useful distinction between the meanings of ‘concept’ and ‘conception’
- I would add ‘conceptualization’ as a formative or provisional conception.

As already noted, the overall coverage on doing philosophy struck me as rather weakly developed, nor did it seem integrated very well into the thematic flow of the book. Furthermore, the overall treatment here did not make the practice of philosophy seem very interesting or appealing. Nevertheless, some strong points are made: “...‘doing philosophy involves more than logical appraisal. It also requires explanation and development of relevant concepts, and an effort to justify a better understanding of the pertinent issues.” (p. 10) This statement is augmented by a quote from J.S. Mill: “...the cultivation of the understanding consists...in learning the grounds of one’s own opinions.” (p. 81) More expansively, Section 8.2, entitled Philosophy Explicates What is Implicit in Our Concepts and Commitments, is very thoughtful; and the treatment of intersubjective inquiry is interesting as well.

In all, this is a very valuable and constructive book that merits serious readership beyond the philosophy community. Regarding learned writing, the author outlines a compelling case for first cohering and refining a thesis, and only then proceeding to fully articulate and substantiate it in natural language form. His attendant advocacy of clear, engaging, substantive, and rigorous written argument is fostered and enabled, moreover, by the overall guidance, pointed caveats, and sensible heuristics that he presents. I just wish that I had read this book years ago! Alas, my disappointment with Part II limits my rating of this quite worthwhile book to Four Stars.

Overwhelming

I received the Mary-El Tarot today, quite unexpectedly. Amazon has listed it as back-ordered for awhile now, and I hadn't noticed the e-mail telling me it had been shipped ... but suddenly it appeared. I opened the package with some trepidation -- would it live up to the expectations I've had for it over the past four or five years? The answer is an unqualified YES.

The presentation is excellent: the sturdy box has a hinged top that stays closed with a hidden magnet. The compartment for the cards is much better quality than many similar boxes. (But it's necessary to tip the whole box over to get all the cards out; the thumb hole doesn't go all the way to the bottom of the box. A ribbon attached to the bottom of the compartment should fix that.)

When I pulled the cards out of the box and began my initial quick glance through the deck -- to get a feel for the cards and to make sure they were all there -- the first thing I noticed is that one of the cards was backwards in the deck, and out of order: the Queen of Cups. I set it aside and started going through the rest of the deck, expecting that maybe I'd find another card was missing. But no: they were all there. I just had an extra Queen of Cups. The wise woman in that card is staring at me now as I write this. About her, Marie White says this: "The Queen of Cups _is_ the Holy Grail, the reservoir and container of all our subconscious and ancestral wisdom, the dark waters of the abyss." Oh my.

I've now spent two hours going through the deck slowly, card by card, spending a few seconds or a minute on each one, then going back to them again and again. I've never seen a Tarot deck as rich, beautiful, and haunting as this one. The images all seem utterly unique, yet utterly familiar. With every card I have a sense of deep familiarity, as if I've been seeing the images my whole life, but I can't quite name them or remember where I saw them; but every familiar image is also deeply surreal, alien, new.

A few initial reactions:

--The box describes the Mary-El Tarot as inspired by the three main Tarot traditions: Rider-Waite, Marseille and Thoth. I've had a Thoth deck for a long time, but never really paid much attention to it: Crowley's occultism never appealed to me. But I just took it out again and looked over the cards, and the strong influence of them on the Mary-El is quite apparent (and makes me appreciate Thoth in a way I never have before). Many of the cards in this new deck have the swirling, cosmic feel of the Thoth cards, the multiple layers of surreal symbolism, and the odd presence of simple geometrical forms: a few lines forming a triangle, for example.

--Some common elements: lots of runes (I have no idea what they mean); lots of tattoos; a strong eroticism, including explicit male, female and (in the Aces) androgynous nudity; a surprising degree of variation in approach from one card to another, including strong human portraits (the Queen of Cups); landscapes (the Fours); close-up animal "portraits" (the Knight of Wands); symbolic abstraction (7 of Disks); and so on.

--The colors are extremely rich and dense: you'll find no airy-fairy pastels here. This is the earthiest Tarot I've ever seen.

--Each card has a simple black border that makes the image really pop. The titles are printed in a simple font (maybe too simple; to me it lacks character).

--Occasionally the level of detail in the original painting is so fine that it's hard to see in the cards. There's some not-quite-legible writing in the King of Swords, for example.

--The style of much of the art is reminiscent of Leo and Diane Dillon, especially their more psychedelic SF/fantasy book covers from the 60s and 70s, which were some of favorite book covers growing up.

--There are several cards that didn't appeal to me, or that I actually didn't like, when I first saw the images on the author's website. But today I've found that in every single case, by lingering over the card, looking more closely at the details, and simply questioning their meaning, I've changed my mind. I can honestly say now that there's not a single card in the deck that doesn't strike me as profound and beautiful.

--There's also not a single card in the deck that I can really say I understand with anything like a firm grasp of what's going on. That's a good thing!

--Is it my imagination or is there quite a bit of biblical imagery in these cards?

--The cards are large and glossy. They seem very good quality, but I'm still a little worried how they'll react to much handling. The glossiness is almost sticky, which makes me think they may attract dust and grit which might start to scratch the cards. Also, I do wonder if the edges of the cards will hold up: will the high gloss coating start to peel over time? No idea. But it's a concern. The quality is high, but not as good as the best (i.e., the Kat Black's Golden and Touchstone Tarots). At least that's my first impression.

So my conclusion is this: The Mary-El Tarot is (and here's a phrase I usually _loathe_, but it's totally appropriate here) an instant classic. I can hardly conceive that there might be a better Tarot published this year, or this decade. It's that good.

A bit of overkill.

Although I have given this product only three stars, my dissatisfaction does not derive from the cards themselves. The Mary-El Tarot cards are every bit as intriguing and lovely as any other reviewer has already stated. Ms. White writes that her tarots pay homage to three different and important branches of the tarot family: the Marseilles, the Waite-Smith, and the Crowley-Harris. With obvious nods to each throughout, every card is a self-contained work of art that reflects the artist's vision and her internal synthesis of various (and often contradictory) personal and esoteric influences. Having said that, I have studied Tarot under a primarily Golden Dawn framework for almost two decades and feel that I can very often see the point that Ms. White is trying to make in her artwork. At the risk of sounding haughty, I do not recommend this deck as anyone's first deck. These cards are complicated and will require some attention in order to use them well, but I believe that they may eventually be a deck I use with confidence. As an aside, the cards are also wonderfully large and may require some practice shuffling.

Unfortunately, after being mezmerized with startling and provocative imagery on nearly every card, I tried to read the book. Schiffer must be scolded for this. Obviously, they employ more typesetters than editors. The introduction bombards the reader with an awkward and trite cut-and-paste style that is so poorly punctuated and disorganized that I pitied Ms. White for being allowed to appear so unprepared by her publisher. The descriptions of the cards fare little better. In the past, I have reveled in reading or listening to an artist explain his or her process. Ms. White tries to explain her cards as Tarot rather than art, and, in the process, becomes so vague and impersonal that she contradicts herself from card to card. In and of itself, the idea of mystical or esoteric contradiction is not bad or, for that matter, uncommon; but Ms. White's skills do seem more artistic than literary (which is why two of most important historical esoteric decks had both a writer and an artist). At the end of each card's description, the reader is also treated to the card's personal meaning and then the card's traditional divinatory meaning. These are unnecessary redundancies, as many are practically verbatim repetition, seemingly included for no other reason than to fill the page. I think the publisher sorely overestimated the need for packaging on this product. What could have been a deck and book(let) set has turned into a package the size of a small boardgame or a box of chocolates, with a hurried and bloated book filling up too much of an otherwise empty box.

Finally, I will say this: please buy these cards. If you collect tarots, this will be a fascinating addition to your collection. If you also read tarot, I believe these cards will eventually produce some of your best work. Schiffer alone dropped the proverbial ball on this one by rushing and overpackaging Ms. White's beautiful deck of tarot cards. Enjoy.

Most BEAUTIFUL tarot

This tarot by Marie White is intensely cosmic and conveys a vivid sense of mystery and the divine. Beautiful seems too cliche a word for a new item in a already saturated medium filled with lots of beautiful decks. So maybe stunning or "stop what you are doing and look at me" awesomeness might suffice.

It's a bit large and hard to shuffle, but if you practice I think it gets easier.

I think this is a deck that comes along only once in a while. Thought provoking and meditative. Wild and non-violent, gentle but extremely powerful at the same time.

Very much recommended. Beginners may have some trouble though. I think the author assumes some traditional and esoteric tarot knowledge is known already. The book is not a light read, but has a warmth to it that is poetic and meditative. Time will tell as I become more familiar, but I feel this deck may be best used for personal, spiritual growth rather than readings for others.
