Don't use another essential oil without out this book!

I've had this book now for several months and I seriously pick it up at least once or twice a day. Yes, I am a professional aromatherapist and a registered nurse, but neither of these are necessary or required to find this huge book of information helpful and necessary. You absolutely DO NOT have to be even well versed in essential oils to NEED this book. If you use any essential oil for any reason - you need this book. If you don't understand some of the chemical constituent information, then take time to learn it - it isn't difficult and the author makes it really very easy. Is it an absolute necessity for anyone who sells, uses or advocates the use of essential oils - YES!! It is easily segmented into even just a particular essential oil and you can quickly see if there are cautions for pregnancy or any other health issue. It astounds me that so much research, documentation and time had to go into accumulating all of this information and the price of the book is very under priced in my opinion when I consider so many of the healthcare texts and college texts that give a smidgen of the information in this one book. Yes, it is big and yes it is heavy and yes it is worth every single cent you might spend on it.

Robert Tisserand is THE single most respected authority for so many things pertaining to aromatherapy and essential oils but particularly when it is a question of safety. He has been studying, researching and writing about this subject for very many years. This book sits beside my desk - and I have many aromatherapy books that aren't in this revered spot - so I can easily reach over and check, double check everything whether I am making up a blend, writing a blog, commenting on a social media site or just curious - the answers are always (yes, always) there and easily found. He has given the world of aromatherapy what no one else could - legitimacy and safety. I for one will be forever grateful.

I feel VERY strongly about this!

Anyone with a sense of responsibility will own this book. If you are in a Network Marketing company and you teach classes, YOU NEED THIS BOOK. Stop passing on the lies and hype from your upline and mommy bloggers. DO YOUR RESEARCH and make sure you are passing on SAFE usage information. There are masses of people using essential oils now, and it's YOUR responsibility as a representative for your company, to see that they have GOOD and SAFE usage information.

This isn't a second edition...IT'S A WHOLE NEW BOOK!!!!

If you had the first edition of this book, you are going to LOVE the second edition. If don't have the first edition of this book, you are going to LOVE this edition. I almost hate to call it a second edition...it's a complete rewrite with far more information than the first. It's a heavy tome, full of detailed information including individual oils, their uses, contraindications, etc. Every page has something useful on it and this has already become a go to resource for me in my aromatherapy practice.

A Sample of What Passes for "Research" in the Humanities

As one reads through sections of this book, one quite quickly gets the sense that, like so much of what passes as "research" in the "academic" study of Literature (as much as that title is itself an oxymoron), this is a work that exists more for the purposes of being listed on a CV than for the purposes of actually being read by anyone, let alone to be actually applied to solve a serious problem in the real world. Whereas Physics put a man on the moon and Computer Science made the iPhone possible, the purpose and usefulness of so-called "research" in non-serious fields like the Humanities remain ambiguous to anyone outside the narrow circle of "professors" and students confined to such departments.

Born in the foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge mountains, Earl Hamner, Jr., is an award-winning author, screenplay writer, and producer of several well-known teleplays and television series. He got his big break writing episodes for The Twilight Zone, including the popular “You Drive.” His most well-known television series is The Waltons, which is based on his best-selling stories Spencer’s Mountain and The Homecoming. Both novels were inspired by his own childhood.

GREAT AND TOUCHING READ

This of course is the beginning of the Waltons (TV). This book is now often overlooked, which is a shame as it is a well written piece of literature. This is the touching story of a typical mountain family during the depression years. I enjoy rereading this one ever so often, near Christmas. It is not a lengthly tale, it is one you can read on a snowy Saturday (get you in the mood). This is also a well crafted book, told my a master story teller. The author's character developement is absolutely wonderful. I hate to use the word "classic" as I feel it is quite over used, but with this work I am tempted. It is certainly a book you should add to your list.

Warmly Engaging

"It is remembered in my family that on Christmas Eve of 1933 my father was late arriving home. That, along with the love he and my mother bestowed upon their eight red-headed offspring, is fact. The rest is fiction."

So begins The Homecoming (Buccaneer Books, 1970), a homespun family tale set under the "cold Virginia sky" of Spencer's Mountain. Written by Earl Hamner, Jr., The Homecoming became the made-for-TV movie that launched The Waltons. It's a December staple around our house. But how close is the movie, The Homecoming: A Christmas Story (1971), to the book?

Starring Richard Thomas as John Boy and (a hopelessly miscast) Patricia Neal as Olivia, the movie's storyline is quite close to the book. However, some of the names of the characters differ:In the movie it's Clay-Boy, Matt, Becky, Shirley, Mark, Luke, John, and Pattie-Cake Spencer instead of John-Boy, Jason, Mary Ellen, Erin, Ben, Jim-Bob, and Elizabeth Walton. It's Misses Etta and Emma Staples sisters instead of the eccentric Mamie and Emily Baldwins.

The usuals in the book also appear in the film, sometimes in slightly altered form: Ike Godsey isn't a store keeper in the book, but rather a restauranter, chef, bartender, bouncer and pool hall owner (p. 76, 71). As in the movie, we also meet Sheriff Ep Bridges, preacher Hawthorne Dooley, the "backwoods Robin Hood" - Charlie Sneed, and even Chance the cow.

We meet a few characters in the book not appearing in the movie, such as Birdshot Sprouse, "a tall, obliging, not-too-bright boy" (p. 60) who tells the Spencer (Walton) children about the "city lady" with a Missionary Box of Christmas gifts "down at the post office" (p. 62).

All in all, the movie follows the book closely, at times lifting dialogue and plot right out of the book, verbatim:

- "I wish my daddy could fly" says little Pattie Cake ("Elizabeth") on p.13

- Olivia's Christmas cactus (p. 11, 12)

- Clay boy's complaint, "I'm an old mother duck" (p. 16)-

- "Son, you're goen to be sorry you did that" snarls Becky (Mary Ellen) on p. 19

- Olivia stirring her applesauce cake and singing/humming O Little Town of Bethlehem (p. 21)

- Bickering kids (p.p. 19-22, 48-50)

- "We don't accept charity in this family" declares Livy, p. 63

- "I wonder how news got all the way to the North Pole that you wanted to be a writer" observes Daddy Walton in both book (p. 121) and movie to young Clay Boy (John Boy).

Here's how the basic plot reads in the book:

While awaiting their Daddy's arrival on a cold Christmas Eve in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia during the Depression, matriarch Olivia Spencer sends 15 y.o. Clay-Boy out in search of his father. The clan patriarch, Clay Spencer, is a somewhat different man from the John Walton later portrayed by Ralph Waite:

"Clay Spencer was a hard man to measure up to. Like all Spencer men he was a crack shot, a good provider for his family, an honest `look-em-in-the-eye' man, an enthusiastic drinker, a prodigious dancer, a fixer of things, a builder, a singer of note, a teller of bawdy stories, a kissing, hugging, loving man whose laughter would shake the house, and who was not ashamed to cry." (p. 25)

There's no mention of a bus going off the road as a possible explanation for Daddy Walton's lateness, as in the movie. Clay Sr. is simply, inexplicably late. Olivia and her brood of eight - along with Grandpa Homer and Grandma Ida are newsless as to Clay's dilatory arrival and can do nothing but wait. Later, Olivia sends out young Clay Boy to search for Clay, Sr.

While looking for his father, Clay Boy runs into Sheriff Bridges at Ike Godsey's pool hall. The Sheriff has arrested Charlie Sneed for "hunten out of season" (p. 78) - not for relieving local merchants of their foodstuffs, as in the movie. The verbal exchange between Charlie and the swaggering Sheriff Bridges (p. 79-80) is almost word-for-word from the book (p. 78-80).

Clay-Boy gets a ride to the turn off of the First Abyssinian Baptist Church from Sheriff Bridges (not borrowing Sneed's car), and has to trudge to the church on foot in the dark due to road conditions. In the dark and snow, Clay Boy is guided to the church by the sound of singing It Came Upon a Midnight Clear (p. 85) and is invited in by black preacher Hawthorne Dooley. At the close of the Christmas Eve service, Dooley offers Clay Boy "a ride on General" - his horse - to the Staples' home in search of Clay, Sr. (p. 93).

After being regaled with a rehearsal of the charms of Ashley Longworth (p. 102, 103) and Enrico Caruso on the Staples' Victrola (p. 104), Clay Boy accepts a horse-drawn sleigh ride home from Misses Etta and Emma (p. 107-108). The sisters make Clay Boy a gift of "a Mason jar of recipe" (p. 110), not eggnog as in the movie. Arriving home, Clay Boy presents the jar to his mother who declares she'll use it "to make frosting for my applesauce cake" (p. 110). The recipe for both cake and frosting appears in the back of the book.

Daddy Walton finally arrives home after 1:00 a.m. on Christmas Day:

Snuggling with packages, Clay entered. Heartwarming little novel.

I picked this up at the library one day, being in a Christmas mood and after years of watching The Walton's "Homecoming" Christmas special and loving it. The story is quite different fromt the TV movie, somewhat more bleak in tone...Olivia here is worrying that her husband's delay in coming home is because he is off drinking somewhere instead of hurt in a bus accident. Probably a bit more accurate feel of the Depression here. Still very absorbing and touching, the characters are no less lovable. A nice short read for a rainy day.

A great read if you are interested in how the internet ...

Most of us accept our seeking for privacy as granted. One of the insights I gained from this book is that it is not. You learn from this book, that the right to privacy is a relatively recent cultural innovation, and that in this world of humans connected more and more to the internet and thus to internet companies, privacy basically is an illusion. Therefore, privacy is not the right category when it comes to argue about how we should design the data relationship between individuals and large corporations.

As a former data science lead at Amazon, a long year data consultant and a professor on social data, Weigend has deep insights into what large corporations know about us (which is more than you would think). In this book he suggests alternative categories and ways of thinking that allow us to argue about what we should and what we should not allow those corporations to do with our data. As a humanist, Weigend is an advocate of the individual.

A great read if you are interested in how the internet economy uses your data and what we as individuals should do about it.

A great introduction to the issues surrounding data privacy explained in an easy way. While most probably use services without thinking about data, Andreas encourages readers to think about the data they provide. His thoughts on how data "refineries" should work harmoniously with customers is interesting, and I am curious if governments will force refineries to take such actions in the future.

I have been eagerly awaiting this book – I knew about its plans for many years when Andreas Weigend was teaching at Stanford and I myself was working on recommendation solutions. I just finished reading it and it by far exceeded my expectations: It is an amazingly clear book with some surprising examples not just for experts or students, but for netizens and citizens!

Great review for French Teachers!

I use this book when presenting grammar to all levels of my students. The examples are made for adults, so the teacher needs to plan to change some of the examples given to meet the maturity of his / her students.

I used this as a text book at the Sorbonne, as it clearly explained French grammar and verbs. My students have commented that they understand the way the book (through me) explains grammar rules.

Because the grammar is explained in French, my students learn useful language quickly, and can speak about the language in French. I start this in French 1. I present the grammar in context by having the students watch videos or listen to a recording of some sort. I have them then read something with the same grammar used in the same context, and try to elicit their observations. Then I fill in the blanks, if you will, using this book. The corresponding workbooks are really AP / college level. I create my own worksheets / activities in order practice the grammar in the same context of the listening and reading activities(if necessary). Finally I have them produce something in writing (story, essay) or perform a skit using the grammar taught. This is a great resource.

Great Grammar Book!

If you are looking for a comprehensive grammar book in French this is the book for you! This is a great French grammar book that was designed specifically for French as a Foreign Language (Francais Langue Etrangere) at the second year level for courses at the Sorbonne. As a teacher and perpetual student of French, I like the clear explanations and the bulleted format. I also enjoy the hints of things to avoid as well as text boxes that explain word choice problems that often plague the non-native speaker. While this text does not have any English, I think that most learners beyond Second Year in High School would have few problems using it. The only downfall that I have found is that there is no table of contents, which means you may have to sift through to find what you need, although the index is quite thorough. Bonne lecture!
