I wish every Christian would read this book, especially those against or unsure of psychology.

I am so thankful for and impressed with this book. I have been struggling over the issue of psychology and how to integrate it with Christianity for a long time, and this finally answers the question for me. I was prompted to look for this book after a not-so-great experience my husband and I had with "biblical counselors". It all felt wrong, but they were obviously Bible-centered and cared about helping us, so we tried. It just never felt like they were really listening, but instead just giving directives and exhortations, though in a loving way. They claimed that their method was the only biblical way, and that their method contrasts with the "humanist/secular psychology" in that they want real heart change, not just behavior modification. Since I had been in good, Christian therapy before, I knew that it wasn't just about behavior modification, but about real change through relationship. This book has helped me put real understanding and deep thought behind my feelings and experiences with these counselors, and helped me grow and fall even more in love with Jesus- the true counselor who does sit with us and love us in our weaknesses, and who is the only complete Fulfiller of all our needs. If you have strong opinions against Christian-integrated therapy, I challenge you to read this book with an open mind. Even if you don't agree with the conclusion, at least you will have a better understanding of how strong, Bible-believing Christians fully believe in using the tools and research from psychology to more effectively help people who are seriously hurting.

Excellent and informative. Much bigger scope than what the titles implies. I thought it was going to start off stupid (judging from the topic, not the author who is well known and highly experienced and credible) like burying PVC tubes in your rose garden. Very well written and enjoyable to read.

About the Author
Ivan Morris studied Japanese language and culture at Harvard University while serving in the Intelligence Section of the U.S. Navy Reserves. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of London in 1951, he worked for the Far East Section of the BBC as well as for the Japan and Pacific departments of the British Foreign Office. He lived in Tokyo for several years, writing, lecturing, and teaching. In 1960 he joined what would later be renamed the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University, where he served as department chair. He was elected a Fellow of St. Anthony’s College at Oxford in 1966. Morris published numerous books on Japanese history, literature, and politics and produced distinguished translations of classical and contemporary Japanese works. He died in 1976.

Worth while read

I loved this book. It makes a great companion to The Tale of Genji and made reading Genji so much easier because I had an understanding of the background of Heian Japan. It's an easy read, with good footnotes and a good bibliography. The appendices are very helpful. If you want a better understanding of the background to The Tale of Genji, get this book.

Reading the Genji Monogatari by Murasaki (X Century) is like an immersion into old Japan. But without the splendid comments and explanation of Ivan Morris, most of that world would be lost for us, falling back into the darkness of remote times.

For those interested in the Heian time and/or those interested in books like the Pillow Book or the Tale of Genji, this book is a useful resource with lots of helpful background information regarding the court, politics, everyday life in the court, and much more. However, it is a much older book and a book of its time. For example, religion and superstition are separate chapters, and some French phrases are thrown around without any translations. I guess the original target readers were expected to understand?

I must also point out that most modern readers will have newer translations of the books referenced in this book, so there will be some minor and major differences. The names of the head consorts as so often referenced in the Pillow Book and Lady Murasaki's diary are stated to be totally different names for some reason.

About the Author
Thomas R. Gilbert has a BS in chemistry from Clarkson and a PhD in analytical chemistry from MIT. After 10 years with the Research Department of the New England Aquarium in Boston, he joined the faculty of Northeastern University, where he is currently associate professor of chemistry and chemical biology. His research interests are in chemical and science education. He teaches general chemistry and science education courses and conducts professional development workshops for K–12 teachers. He has won Northeastern’s Excellence in Teaching Award and Outstanding Teacher of First-Year Engineering Students Award. He is a fellow of the American Chemical Society and in 2012 was elected to the ACS Board of Directors.

Rein V. Kirss received both a BS in chemistry and a BA in history as well as an MA in chemistry from SUNY Buffalo. He received his PhD in inorganic chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where the seeds for this textbook were undoubtedly planted. After two years of postdoctoral study at the University of Rochester, he spent a year at Advanced Technology Materials, Inc., before returning to academics at Northeastern University in 1989. He is an associate professor of chemistry with an active research interest in organometallic chemistry.

Natalie Foster is emeritus professor of chemistry at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She received a BS in chemistry from Muhlenberg College and MS, DA, and PhD degrees from Lehigh University. Her research interests included studying poly(vinyl alcohol) gels by NMR as part of a larger interest in porphyrins and phthalocyanines as candidate contrast enhancement agents for MRI. She taught both semesters of the introductory chemistry class to engineering, biology, and other nonchemistry majors and a spectral analysis course at the graduate level. She is the recipient of the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for distinguished teaching.

SMARTWORK IS INCLUDED!!

I received my book in the mail very quickly! It is brand new as advertised. AND it comes with SmartWork access and the eBook. That was the most important part of my purchase. some people will still sell their books with a used access code. That is why YOU NEED TO PURCHASE THE BOOK NEW. I was a little worried I would make the purchase and SmartWork would not be included, but it is found inside the first few pages. My university bookstore is selling the book for twice the amount on here. If you are trying to save your money this would be a great purchase to make! A periodic table is also located inside the book. I glanced at the first chapter to see how understandable the book would be, and it seems like a pretty reasonable read. The only thing abut the book itself that worries me is that all of the solutions to the practice questions are not in the back of the book. Only some of them. So! I am considering purchasing the solutions manual. I am not sure if I will or not yet. The only thing I did not like about my purchase was when I opened the package, on the plastic covering, there was a sticker saying NOT RETURANABLE IF PLASTIC IS BROKEN, and my books covering was broken before I even opened the box. So...if your book has an issue I'm assuming you wouldn't be able to return it?? My book was fine so no returns necessary! I did take pictures of the covering before I touched the book just in case there were any issues. Other than that, this is a wonderful purchase for any college student trying to save money!!!!!!!

CHEM 105 - General College Chemistry

Got this for a college class. It's a pretty textbook... textbook. Not really any surprises here- it's a book about chemistry, full of chemistry-related concepts and definitions with practice exercises to apply what you read in every chapter. Also included is access to an interactive eBook as well as registration for online tutorials and homework, something more and more textbooks seem to be doing lately. I highly recommend fully utilizing the online/digital supplements with this book, they are awesome at helping you work through things.

Not very well written for an entry-level chemistry book. I ended up just looking most difficult things up online (for free) because the book does such a poor job at explaining them. And the smartworks computer program is horrendous -- probably the worst designed homework software I've ever used.

SUPERB OVERVIEW OF JAPANESE WRITING SYSTEM

The book contains a very short but meaty introduction to the Japanese writing system. It covers the several types of Japanese alphabet, Katakana, Hiragana, Ro-omaji & Kanji and provides with information on the origin for the names for these different writing systems in the Japanese language. For instance, for the the word Kanji, which is one of the most daunting systems for many Japanese language students, it breaks down the word in two; Kan & Ji, showing the meaning for Kan= Chinese & Ji= Character. Therefore, Kanji simply means Chinese characters and so on with the other writing systems, Hiragana, etc.
Also, it shows how to write them and a history and etymological background for the Japanese alphabet.
What it shone through the book was the calligraphic examples given and the photos all along.
It's a very complete work the authours did for this title and as a guide for someone who's into calligraphy or even learning the language from scratch is purely grand.

Shodo is one of my interests, being a student of it now for a couple of years.

This book is very useful for learning the basics of hiragana and katakana. It goes stroke by stroke and does a good job of providing details about each. The order, along with the style is provided.

I would have liked to have seen more kanji. Other than that, it is a useful resource.

About the Author

Maria Isabel Rodrigues is a professor at the University of Campinas in Brazil. She received her BS, MS, and PhD degrees in food engineering from the University of Campinas, Brazil. Dr. Rodrigues has taught courses of experimental design and process optimization at a postgraduate level at the University of Campinas, in private companies, and at other universities and institutions. She has worked as a consultant using this statistical tool in various specialty areas such as bioremediation, developments in microbial analytical methods, and fermentation and enzyme processes as well as in the automotive, chemical, petrochemical, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food industries.

Antonio Francisco Iemma has been a university-level teacher for more than 40 years. He has taught mathematics and biostatistics at the University of Ribeir�o Preto, the Universidade Estadual Paulista, and the University of S�o Paulo. He received his master’s and doctoral degrees in statistics from the University of S�o Paulo, Brazil. He did his postdoctoral work at the Facult� Universitaire de Sciences Agronomiques de Gembloux in Belgium. Dr. Iemma has been a visiting lecturer at universities in Brazil and other countries such as Argentina, Belgium, Columbia, Cuba, and France, among others. He is also the former manager of biostatistics in the experiment optimization sector for GlaxoSmithKline Biological in Rixensart in Belgium.

Great DOE approach.

A very useful handbook about DOE with an interesting theoretical and practical approach. This book shows a large amount of examples of DOE applied to bioengineering process with good explanations about results, data interpretation and important hints to avoid misinterpretation. I really liked it!
