if you are a newbie on modern javascript this book is great for you and if you're a experienced developer you ...

I've been a back-end developer for about 5 years and started front-end developing about 3 years ago with extjs, however I still couldn't get a proper grip on modern javascript, so far I've tried angular, where I successfully write spaghetti code, my second attempt at modern javascript has been with aurelia, it has very interesting new concepts, however it has been very difficult to get through updates without jspm breaking some packages and even when jspm is successful, there's not enough newbie material for a full web app.

One of my other top choice was emberjs I have to say at first I though it was going to be another angular mess (for big projects) and through the book Erik Hanchett explains very patiently how it all works and how to write and organize modern javascript applications.

The cookbook goes through all basics elements of emberjs in a practical way, if you are a newbie on modern javascript this book is great for you and if you're a experienced developer you might want to skim over a few paragraphs every now and then, all in all it was a great book, however I found a few typos every now and then, it was no problem because they were very obvious typos so nothing to worry about.

This is a great book for aspiring, beginning and intermediate Ember developers.

Ember is a framework covering many aspects of building (single page) web applications,
but it is known to have a somewhat steep learning curve (depending on your base knowledge and background).

This book will help flattening that learning curve dramatically.

The title of this book could also have been: "Serving a seven course meal, using Ember".

It contains a broad collection of different topics and concepts presented as recipes, helping you when building an Ember application.

Each recipe consists of an explanation of how that particular feature works and shows how it can be applied in your application (including source code).

I consider myself an intermediate beginner on Ember, and i learned alot of new things and subtle details when reading this book.

The only (minor) negative points i could find are:
- there are some typos in the example code
- some recipes could have better chosen examples

Greatly recommended for anyone interested in Ember.

I'm a technical reviewer for this book. I'm also a very experienced Ember developer - I've worked with services and writing an auth service, I've tried out d3 with ember, I've done ember TDD and dealt with run loop issues.

So although this book didn't have a lot of new content for me, I can confidently say that this is the book that I wish I'd had when I was just learning Ember (and the book I wish the interns at my company would be forced to read). Erik does a great job stepping through each feature of Ember in a clear and concise way, with great examples, in order to demonstrate how it works.

The book explains the potentially confusing file structure all the way up through advanced features of the framework like services and popular external libraries. He has a great section on websockets, which is something I haven't worked with yet, which goes to show that this book will take your knowledge from 0 to a point where you'll be comfortable developing on existing and new Ember apps.

About the Author
Scot Danforth is an Assistant Professor in the School of Education, University of Missouri-St. Louis. He received his Ph.D. in special education from the University of South Florida. He has worked in a variety of roles within the field of speical education; paraprofessional, classroom teacher, consultant, researcher, and teacher educator. He is the co-author of two books and has published articles in leading special education journals in the United States and Europe. He specializes in the education of students experiencing behavioral difficulties, the social construction of disability, and the philosophy of social inquiry.

Joseph Boyle is a professor in the Department of Philosophy, Principal of St. Michael's College, and a member fo the Centre for Bioethics at the University of Toronto.

I like this book because it encapsulates behavior management and the research behind it by referencing the theorists to which each behavior management style can be attributed to. This is a great book for reviewing classroom management styles and very helpful for any new teacher.

The Cases are Based in Reality

I haven't gone through the entire book yet, but so far so good. The cases really represent real life situations and are easy to read and understand. The book arrived quicker than I thought it would so I was well prepared for class. Thanks Amazon for being to amazing...there were several people in my class that STILL have not received their book from other vendors.

This collection of key speeches by national leaders provides a vivid and accurate documentary history of American woman's rights and suffrage movement from its beginnings in the 1840s through 1920. Offering many rare and previously unpublished selections, it brings together the work of fifteen notable reformers who played central roles in shaping and directing the movement and in articulating the diverse issues and viewpoints that characterized it. The discourses reveal the strategies used by early woman's rights advocates in adapting their appeals to varied audiences, responding to opposition, and advancing their cause in the political arena.

Each of the twenty-six selections is annotated to supply historical information that is likely to be unfamiliar to contemporary readers. The earliest speeches deal primarily with anti-slavery platforms and the repressive patriarchal laws that gave men complete control over property, women, and children. Several speeches by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Sojourner Truth follow; Susan B. Anthony is represented by her famous speech in defense of her vote. Racial issues--especially lynching and Jim Crow laws--are addressed in speeches by Ida B. Wells and Mary Church Terrell. Speeches by Anna H. Shaw and Carrie Chapman Catt--leaders in the fight for woman suffrage--are also included. The volume ends with an address by Crystal Eastman laying out a feminist agenda that is pertinent today. This work and its companion volume make a significant contribution to our knowledge of the early woman's rights movement and the persuasive message it brought to the American people. The script, a collaboration with master puppet maker Ralph Lee, was created for the premiere production of the play at The Public Theater in New York in 1994.

In a Foreword to this edition, Moraga comments on her concerns about nationhood, indigenism, queer sexuality, and gender information.

Schizophrenia as a religious craze

This is a rewriting and expansion of the myth of Medea in a "post-modern" and "post-colonial" situation in America, where the South has become Aztlan due to a Mexican revolution that pays lip service to the old Aztec gods with Jason having an important position there; where the white society up North has cleansed itself entirely of any ethnic penetration; and where an in-between bumper zone is the survival locale of those who fit pn neither side, like for instance Medea, and whose capital is Phoenix.

Medea has been exiled by Jason with her son Adolfo/Chac-Mool from Aztlan. She tries to go back to the Indian traditions of the Aztecs.

The music is Pre-Columbian. The chorus of four women represents Cihuatateo, four warrior women who have died in childbirth. They embody the four directions and four colors of Aztec tradition: East and red, North and black, West and white, South and blue. They play most parts except Medea, Luna, Chac Mool and Mama Sal. All characters are held by female actresses except Chac-Mool who is the only male on stage.

Medea is living the life of a lesbian with her lover Luna though she protests she is not a lesbian. She is a complicated woman, the mother of a son, only one - though she wanted a daughter to take care of her in old age and to spite her husband Jason already that long ago if not from the very start - and that son is getting of age - thirteen - to answer the call from his father to go back to Aztlan.

The fact that all characters but one are females shows an essential point in Medea's vision. She sees the world as purely feminine and woman as a pure mother, and a mother is only satisfied when she is the mother of a daughter. We are definitely inside Medea's total schizophrenia dressed up as an Aztec myth. The key is given by Cihuatateo East who tells us the creation myth, Aztec style.

" Creation myth. In the place where the spirits live, there was once a woman who cried constantly for food. She had mouths everywhere. In her wrists, elbows, ankles, knees. . . And every mouth was hungry y bien, gritona. Bueno, to comfort la pubre, the spirits flew down and began to make grass and flowers from the dirt brown of her skin. From her gre�as, they made forests. From those ojos negros, pools and springs. And from the slopes of her shoulders and senos, they made mountains y valles. At last she will be satisfied, they thought. Pero just like before, her mouths were everywhere, biting and moaning. . . opening and snapping shut. They would never be filled. Sometimes por la noche, when the wind blows, you can hear her crying for food."

The whole world was thus created from a hungry woman who was dismantled by the spirits, each part of her body becoming one element in the landscape and her mouth which was everywhere in her body found itself everywhere in the world.

Note the spirits being hostile to that woman - though you can always say they tried to satisfy her - you may understand these spirits were males, though there is no real indication of the fact and the only goddess mentioned in the play is Coatlicue, the goddess represented by the moon, the full moon. She is the goddess of all mothers who died in childbirth. We find that Medea's lesbian lover, Luna, is only the representation of this goddess.

Medea's problem is that she is a woman only in her motherhood. So she cannot accept her son departing to join his father in Aztlan where Jason is to marry a teenage local Apache girl who is barren. She gives him a territory but he needs his son to have a descent.

Medea cannot refuse that departure but she can help her son on his departing night to have some good sleep. She puts him to sleep forever just not to be reduced to nothing by being deprived of her son and consequently of her motherhood.

The lesbian debate is a false debate since Luna is the goddess Coatlicue and lesbianism makes Luna barren to motherhood, hence dependent on Medea's love.

She accuses Coatlicue of treason then and she starts ranting and raving after her crime about how the male god of war who is the son of her mother Coatlicue and thus her brother beheaded her when she was still a child.

This story is a way to explain her devotion to la Luna, her real goddess, and Medea closes the tale by killing herself in a dream of her own where she is served the poison by Chac-Mool who is dead as we know. And Medea's formula is absolutely frightening when she serves the poison to Chac Mool: "Sleep the innocent sleep of the children."

She dies when giving birth to herself and to do that she had to kill her son who then could kill her in the psychiatric hospital where she had been institutionalized, a metaphor of her total escape from the human world. Hence her son coming as a ghost to deliver the poison to her is the symbolical suicide her own crime is necessarily going to bring to her. She will not be negated in her motherhood but she will be negated in her own life.

This becomes a whole metaphor of Chicana women who are nothing outside motherhood, who are goddesses when dying in childbirth, who have to deny men to remain mothers, hence to turn to lesbianism and eventually kill their own sons to save their schizophrenic vision, because these women are schizophrenic.

If there is any future to Chicano culture, to the resurrection of Aztec culture, it will have to come through a vast slaying of fathers and sons in the name of mothers.

That cleansing can come with sleep and not by shedding blood, but men will have to be transmiuted, but that is a vicious circle because then the sons thus transmuted will put their mothers to sleep the same way. The only solution is the end of humanity. If that is not schizophrenic what is?

And the hungry woman will forever reign in the world. If that is not a Post Genocide Traumatic Stress Syndrome what is?

THIS is a GREAT read, an awesome page turner

I LOVE this book. I have read several books through the Amazon Vine program, and I always try to pick authors I am not familiar with. Some have been good, some not so much, THIS is a great suspense novel.

I am not one who believes that the opening line of a story is critical, that said, this one is pretty darn good. Title, The Night Monster, opening line, "Cops weren't supposed to get frightened." How great is that, it just conjures up a picture of a police officer encountering something in the line of duty so beyond his comprehension and experience, he is afraid, or as the case develops, terrified by a life altering event.

As a brief summary, the story is presented in the first person by Jack Carpenter, a former detective. Jack works on finding missing people. To characterize Jack as tenacious is really selling him short. He is willing to do anyting to find and save a missing person. The zeal lead to his early departure from the police force.

Jack's story shows us the bare emotional journey that a parent seaching for a missing child can go through. We can feel the pain and anguish. Jack is not a superhuman, he is not robocop, just a driven guy who wants to make a difference.

This is a super page turner, you will not be able to put it down. I recommend this without hesitation or reservation.

Simply Superb - A Definite Page-Burner

Yes, you will be up all night finishing this book if you plan on starting it any time after 8pm. So be forewarned.

From the opening chapter, with the search for a missing elementary school child, the story burns from one moment to the next. Admittedly, the main character's set up is a cliche - the ex-cop turned private eye with a laser-focus on his expertise (in this case, finding missing kids). But as John Gardner once wrote, All American fiction boils down to one of two plot lines - man rides into town or man rides out of town - it's what the author does with that story that counts. And boy does James Swain deliver.

Once you read that first bit of chapter 3 as the main character, Jack Carpenter, is searching for a missing boy, you know this is not your typical hard-boiled ex-cop story: "Water has a magical effect on autistic children. It calls to them like a siren's song. I found this out...."

This is not your standard cliched ex-cop whose life is on a downward slope; he's got good parts of his life (his relationship with his daughter) and some not so good (his relationship with his estranged wife). Throughout the story, Jack tries to reclaim his life. Sometimes it works and sometimes, well the typical "Hollywood story-telling" does not appear, making his frustrations and experiences much more real (like when Jack tries to buy his old house).

The story is fantastically paced, the writing is well done, and the unique twists will definitely catch you a bit off guard. Just an excellent, suspenseful mystery, and extremely well worth your time.

I'd not read any of James Swain's books before this; now I'll be reading them all.
