A favorite childhood game is given fresh appeal in this warm, humorous picture book.

It was a busy day at Doctor Nice's office. The waiting room was full of patients with various winter ailments from Mrs. Pig's frostbitten nose to the goat kids' headaches, caused by their head-butting style of hockey play. Never fear, Doctor Nice comes up with the perfect cures for them all. In the surprise ending, readers meet the real Doctor Nice an imaginative little boy, playing doctor to his roomful of stuffed animals.

Valeri Gorbachev's cozy, comforting story will warm the coldest winter day and help allay children's fears about visiting the doctor.

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1—Doctor Nice's patients line up to be seen for various ailments: a crow with a hurt foot, a moose with a cold, goats with headaches, and more. Each one describes what is wrong and implores the doctor to help. Doctor Nice bandages, soothes, and advises until only one patient remains: his mommy, calling the very busy doctor to lunch. Illustrations are done in Gorbachev's distinctive watercolor and ink with the animals appearing life size until Mommy appears. Then the perspective shifts to show the small doctor with his stuffed animal patients. VERDICT A good choice for young fans of make believe and Doc McStuffins.—Kelly Roth, Bartow County Public Library, Cartersville, GA

Review
A going-to-the-doctor picture book with a playful twist. While some picture books about doctor visits focus on common fears about shots and such, this one instead immediately assuages such anxieties with its title and then presents a medical office visit as a comforting time. The diminutive Dr. Nice is the story's hero, dispensing advice and care from behind a medical mask and voluminous scrubs. The grateful patients are all anthropomorphic animals who present with myriad ailments, ranging from a crow with a broken foot (injured while skiing) to a pig with a sore nose (diagnosis: frostbite). All the animals' problems seem to be provoked by the wintry weather, and the end of the story reveals that Dr. Nice is a child making the best of indoor playtime. The message seems to be that the best antidote to ward off a case of boredom is a healthy imagination. Throughout, Gorbachev's watercolor-and-ink illustrations infuse the simple tale with humor by emphasizing the size differential between Dr. Nice and some of his patients and by depicting the animals' various mishaps as they describe them. Finally, closing pictures move from imagination to reality to show all the animals as stuffed toys and invite reflection back on the story as a whole. Just what the doctor ordered for storytime fare. (Picture book. 3-5) --Kirkus Reviews

As kids we all played doctor. To me, it was one of the most fun parts of being little. Parents and kids are going to love reading the story about how this kind, sweet and caring child took care of all his animals as they all got hurt on a cold, wintry day. 5 stars

Hellgoing: Stories, by Lynn Coady

With astonishing range and depth, Scotiabank Giller Prize finalist Lynn Coady gives us eight unforgettable new stories, each one of them grabbing our attention from the first line and resonating long after the last.

A young nun charged with talking an anorexic out of her religious fanaticism toys with the thin distance between practicality and blasphemy. A strange bond between a teacher and a schoolgirl takes on ever deeper, and stranger, shapes as the years progress. A bride-to-be with a penchant for nocturnal bondage can’t seem to stop bashing herself up in the light of day.

Equally adept at capturing the foibles and obsessions of men and of women, compassionate in her humour yet never missing an opportunity to make her characters squirm, fascinated as much by faithlessness as by faith, Lynn Coady is quite possibly the writer who best captures what it is to be human at this particular moment in our history.

Life is what it is, or not quite
By Friederike Knabe
Lynn Coady's new story collection, HELLGOING, brings together nine self-contained stories that take a realistic and thought provoking look at a wide range of human relationships in today's world. Reading them we are pushed or pulled into something like a voyeur role, observing in close-up fragments of ongoing or evolving relationships between an array of distinct characters, be they in couples, with family or friends, or crossing paths in professional or casual encounters. Some of the stories can take you on a bit of a rough ride; they rarely are smooth, easy or the content just pleasant. While they might leave us with a sense of unease they also stimulate us to consider more deeply the underlying questions and issues that the author raises. Are they a reflection of contemporary reality or, at minimum, of certain aspects of it? Very likely. Among the quotes on the book's back cover, one (by the National Post) reads: "...There is a searing honesty here about humankind's inability or unwillingness, to make an effort at connection, but the author's own humanity rescues her vision from descending into despair or nihilism." I couldn't have stated my reaction any better. If you look for romantic love or happiness, you will not easily find it in any of these stories.

One story from the collection has remained etched in my mind more than any of the others, titled, Mr. Hope. It is written from the perspective of a young female teacher, who, upon returning to her first school, is reliving intense childhood memories, among them her first encounters with her teacher, Mr. Hope. Lynn Coady exquisitely captures the feelings of a young girl, her anxieties but also her independent spirit. Interweaving the vividly reimagined child's perception with that of the hindsight of the adult looking back, the author tells a story that not only conveys narrative tension and inner drama, she convincingly brings out the girl's emotional confusion and conflicts in a way that will, in some way or another, sound familiar to most readers.

Among the other stories, some characters stand out for me more than others, such as a nun in a hospital who applies her counselling to get an anorexic girl with a religious obsession to take "some food". The title story tackles another important and well-known subject: deep and lasting family strains going back decades that the female protagonist cannot shake off. However, a "reunion" demands a different response so many years later. While all stories are written from the distance of a third person narrator, they do often cut through the surface of the characters' 'normalcy' and expose what lies underneath. Coady's stories focus more on the women's mental state of mind than that of their male counterparts. There is, for example, the young bride who has discovered that "twenty-something" sex is no longer adequate (or never was) and her new partner is a willing if somewhat reluctant participant in the new experiments. Coady pinpoints many of the ambitions and anxieties that younger women experience, whether in private or professional life. She is an astute observer of people and scenarios and her depiction of her central characters is not without a sense of humour or irony.

Canadian Lynn Coady, is with HELLGOING the recent winner of the Scotiabank Giller Prize 2013 and a finalist for the Writers Trust Fiction Prize. [Friederike Knabe]

Exquisite wording
By Larrie M. Thorne
What captured me about this book was not so much the snippets of stories themselves, but the emotion, intimacy, and understanding evoked by the choice and combination of words. This book represents the inner mind of the main characters rather than their actions or conversations. This is very different than anything else I've read. This is not a cheerful book; but, rather one that captures internal self justification and cynicism. I can see why it is an award winner.

Sharp, witty, voice-driven stories that resist quick interpretation.
By Ellen Elizabeth
I couldn't let this collection of sharp, witty, smart stories stand at three stars. No, these stories are not "easy"; their ends do not tie up everything that came before into a neat bow. For me, that's an enticement to read. I do not mind letting the stories work on me and doing my own mental work as a reader. Many of the characters are familiar to me (where they're at in their lives, the worlds they inhabit), and each story has moments of recognition--of "Yes, I know that moment or bit of human experience." Did I mention the humor? I laughed to myself or out loud each story. My favorite was the last one, "Mr. Hope" as I'm especially stunned by authors who can capture childhood/adolescence and "growing up" so well.

So if you need instant gratification when you reach the end of a story, no, this collection may not be for you. If you like books that thrive on voice, are excellently written, and ask that you let their stories settle into your mind, this is more than worth a read.

"Its author surely ranks as our pre-eminent scholar of the law of remedies. Thought later editions of popular and well-established texts can miss the attentions of reviewers, the third edition of Remedies must not. It deserves a loud fanfare.[it] remains a superb book. No-one concerned with remedies for civil wrongs, as a legal academic, student or practitioner, can afford not to have a copy."

Bad Romance: A Stepbrother Novel (Forbidden Love), by Jen McLaughlin

In this explosive novel from bestselling author Jen McLaughlin, a good girl falls for the ultimate bad boy: her stepbrother. Perfect for fans of Sabrina Paige, Caitlin Daire, and Krista Lakes, Bad Romance proves that passion can be so wrong it’s right.

Seven years in the army will change a guy. But after a shoulder wound ends his career as a sniper, Jackson Worthington finds himself back home, fighting a battle that’s all too familiar: keeping his hands off Lily Hastings. She’s still her rich daddy’s little angel, innocent, impossibly lovely, as squeaky-clean as Jackson is dirty. And she’s still his stepsister—forbidden but not forgotten, not after the soul-melting kiss that got him kicked out of the house at eighteen. He couldn’t resist her then. How the hell can he resist her now?

Lily is about to marry a man she doesn’t love, and commit to a high-stress job she hates, all to please the father who controls every waking moment of her life. On top of everything, her teenage crush is back, with a sleek, chiseled body and a trace of the rebellious boy whose lips sealed her fate. Jackson’s timing couldn’t be worse . . . or better. Because Lily’s all grown up, too. She’s aching for another taste. And for the first time, she’s ready to be a bad girl.

Lily is engaged to marry a man she doesn’t love because she’s all about pleasing the parental instead of ...
By Adria Reyes
* A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review.

I was all set to read a “taboo” romance with step siblings in an understandably complicated situation with the odds stacked against them.

What I got was a whiny, spineless, immature brat with a penchant for jerking the hero around and waaaaay too much drama. In fact, I may have spotted a llama roaming around somewhere (As in the drama llama).

So basically the story is that after seven years in the army ends with a shoulder wound Jackson Worthington is back home and still lusting after squeaky clean Lily Hastings, who just happens to be his stepsister. Kissing her was what got him kicked out of the house when he was 18 and basically he still wants the hell out of her. Lily is engaged to marry a man she doesn’t love because she’s all about pleasing the parental instead of finding her own happiness but despite that she and Jackson begin a red hot but secret affair. Of course, nothing can stay a secret for long right?

I just could not overlook how immature and weak Lily was! She needed someone to slap some sense into her pea brain because that girl just created a gigantic problem out of a situation that could have been solved with determination, stubbornness and some old fashion woman’s intuition. To me she seemed like a lifeless puppet who needed a puppet master in order to seem real. She seemed to enjoy playing with the Jackson’s feelings and that didn’t sit well with me. She knew she was hurting him and making him look bad but as long as she didn’t look bad it didn’t matter. I need my heroines to have a backbone in order to connect with them and Lily just didn’t have one.

Jackson was slightly more likable though I seriously questioned his taste in women. He had more development in his personality and I felt like he was more of a multi-dimensional character than Lily. His PTSD symptoms were realistic and really showcased where he was mentally when he was forced home.

Final Verdict: Bad Romance was sadly just what the title suggests, a bad romance which was a shame because I’ve enjoyed Jen McLaughlin’s books in the past.

A decent step-brother story, and it worked for me.

Received a copy of the title in exchange for an honest review.

As I stated in a previous review, the whole "step-brother", aka taboo-type relationship, story line was something that I never really understood the thrill of. Out of nowhere, it seemed that this line was increasingly popular and I just wasn't sure it was a bandwagon I was hopping on.

But now and again, I stumble across one that I'm totally on board with.

Take BAD ROMANCE, for example. When Jackson leaves home, it's against the word of his mother and his (no good, rotten, money whoring) step-father. They are getting him into Yale even if they have to pay him into the good graces of whomever matters. But that's not what Jackson wants -- he's joining the military. The only bright spot in this terrible home is Walt's daughter, three years his junior, Lilly. She's quick to smile, quick to give him an out, quick to help him get his mind off of things. For him to get what he wants though, he needs to leave her behind.

I felt that the 'ganging up' of his mother and Walter on Jackson was a bit overdramatic... But of all the scenes and all the dialogue, that was really the one chunk of words that seemed too far-fetched to me. Aside from that though, the writing was easy to get lost in and the story moved along well. Jackson had been forced to grow up early and hardened quickly, making his chosen profession an easy one to picture him in. Lilly was at times naive, but I felt she was a great counter-point to Jackson.

So for me, this was a decent step-brother story and it worked well in my opinion.

Jackson and Lily
By Amber@WickedGoodReads
Ahhhh. Jackson Worthington, how I love you. Recently there have been a lot of stepbrother romance novels being written, some of them really good and some not so much. My opinion on this one - one of the best ive read! Jen McLaughlin/Diane Alberts has never let me down so when I saw that she was dipping into the stepbrother trope, I had a feeling it was going to be at the top of my list!
Lily Hastings (spoiled Daddy's girl) is contracted to marry some douche in order to save her dad's company. In her mind, by marrying this man she has known her whole life but doesnt love, she is saving the jobs of hundreds of people. Taking one for the team, so to speak. Jackson Worthington is Lily's stepbrother. His worthless mother is married to Lily's overbearing father. As teenagers, Jackson and Lily share one steamy moment before getting caught and Jackson runs away to the military. After an injury forces him home, he and Lily reunite, quite by accident, and this is where the story really takes off. Lots of family drama, internal struggles and sexy times - this book has a really well rounded feel to it. I totally wanted to just pinch Lily's head off at times for her insane loyalty to her father's company. But Jackson... oh my. Sexy, sexy, sexy. The characters were very well developed and the editing was great, even for an ARC. And did I mention the cover.. {fans self}
I will definitely recommend this book and give it 5***** wickedgoodstars! -asw
