About the Author
Chandler Baker grew up in Florida, went to college in Pennsylvania and studied law in Texas, where she now lives with her family and an ever-growing pile of books. Although she loves spinning tales with a touch of horror, she is a much bigger scaredy-cat than her stories would lead you to believe. In addition to the High School Horror series, Chandler is the author of the young adult novel, Alive.

An unexpected twist on Frankenstein

PROS:
Adam is adorable. He’s so socially awkward and odd that you can’t help but fall in love with him. His cheesy grin and complete lack of sense of humor plus the baby bird-like way he follows Tor around is too cute. Absolutely swoon-worthy, much in the same way that R is in Warm Bodies.
The twist is creepy incarnate. Seriously, appalling, disturbing, horror films wish they had that level of crazy.
As a true retelling, it was spot on. The disquieting darkness and foreboding were there, the struggle with being a creator, the God complex Tor had, the obsessive fight to push her scientific discoveries, and the terror at what Adam was capable of were all part of the madness. There were some big gaps from the original Frankenstein, mainly the deep, philosophical questions and internal battles but other than that and the more sinister, poetic aspects of the monster, it was a fair spin-off Shelley.
Tor is fascinating. Incredibly driven, a genius when it comes to science, and a little arrogant, she knows what she wants and she goes for it. At the same time, it’s like she has no emotions. She forgets that people are humans and not part of her experiments and in doing so comes off as a self-absorbed jerk sometimes. The way she treats Owen is pretty terrible. But there’s something about her that draws you in and makes you want to listen, to follow her on her insane adventures.
CONS:
Despite the fast start, after the first couple chapters the story drags and only picks up at the very end. The mundane school life was pretty boring and some days passed with clinched high school drama that the story would have been just as good without.
The romance, if you could call it that, was kind of pointless and seemed to go nowhere. It only served to add more of that typical high school drama.
Owen’s character was neglected. Other than being Tor’s sidekick, it felt like he had no purpose. He’s intelligent, crafty, clever, and one talented tinkering mechanic and yet, he only comes in when he’s being “useful” to Tor. I would have loved to see his true personality and a lot more of it. His lines are sarcastic at some points, and the slap in her face truth Tor needs to hear.
One aspect truly bugged me. There’s a scene where one of the characters is given a *spoiler* date rape drug and it’s just shrugged off, like it’s her fault for being so stupid. I couldn’t get past that.

Tor’s Determination is Inspiring and It’s a Treat to See How Different Parts of Her Personality Show Through.

TEEN FRANKENSTEIN by Chandler Baker felt like a peanut-butter and Sriracha sandwich. It was different, it was unexpected and it was something I certainly wouldn’t have thought of trying.
Baker --- author of the amazing novel ALIVE --- puts a unique twist on Mary Shelley’s well-known FRANKENSTEIN in her second book. It was executed fairly well, which was refreshing to see as most of the “modern twists” on “old tales” end up ripping off of the success of the original story. Baker really made this story her own, and that was both a vice and a virtue.
To start off, we meet Victoria (Tor) Frankenstein, who takes after her dad in the science department. She’s obsessed with reanimating the dead and is determined to do so at some point in her life. We see her develop throughout the story, but Tor seems to have sociopathic tendencies at times and, as one of her classmates puts it, thinks that she’s “better than everyone else.” Regardless, Tor’s determination is inspiring and it’s a treat to see how different parts of her personality show through.
We also meet Owen, Tor’s best friend. Owen is a sarcastic guy, but he remains loyally at Tor’s side, just as a best friend would. As an avid romance reader, I was expecting some clich� romantic tension between Tor and Owen, but there was none, which was quite pleasant. Owen is the only character in the story who provides some much needed reality checks, which is nice because the plot of TEEN FRANKENSTEIN can be fantastical and hard to believe.
Another major character in the story is Adam, the boy who Tor hits with her car, kills and brings back to life. After being reanimated, Adam conveniently has amnesia and can't remember anything about his past life, not even his name, which is why Tor names him “Adam.” Adam imprints on Tor and sees her as a bit of a caregiver. He is a sweet boy, following along with Tor and letting her shock him to re-energize him, even though he screams whenever she does it. There are definitely some cute moments between Tor and Adam, and it was quite nice to see that the author didn’t exploit that relationship and turn it into a full-fledged romance. However, it’s really heart-wrenching to see how Tor only sees Adam as an experiment.
I thought the beginning of TEEN FRANKENSTEIN was a bit boring, but the middle was incredible! I loved that each of the characters developed and were all influenced by their peers, almost like real high schoolers. However, even though there will be a sequel to TEEN FRANKENSTEIN, the ending seemed very forced and down-pat. In fact, it felt like the author was diverging from the actual plot of the book to solve a sub-mystery of her own.
To conclude, I would recommend this book to those who are really into science-fiction, thriller, horror or just generally creepy and spooky books. I wouldn’t recommend it to children under the age of 14 because it does have some very, very mature themes that younger readers may not be able to understand yet. Overall, it was a great read and it was definitely a pleasant break from my usual romance-filled bookshelf!

A fun twist on the classic Frankenstein story that explores who the true monsters are (you know, cause some don't). Tor is a high school genius obsessed with manipulating science to resurrect the dead. After a terrible accident, she is stuck between choosing to turn herself in or cover up her tracks. Of course, she decides to cover her tracks by bringing a dead boy back to life....and then keeping him like a pet....to study......for science.
Each character was well rounded and much more than their classic roles. Tor's character is often frustrating and terrible but not because she's poorly written, she's just kind of a terrible person. Yet, at times I would find myself nodding along as Tor Frankensteined her way through a problem only to realize afterward how messed up her plan was. Her goofy BFF Owen is my absolute favorite and tries to be the moral compass in all of this. As for creature....he's kind hearted, loyal and protective and means well in everything he does though he maybe tries just a little too hard sometimes. He reminds me of a 3 year old trying to fit in with the big kids. This is a definite must-read for YA lovers.
